Peter DeCaprio: Why do people choose competitor X over you?

100% of people will need to use a service at some point throughout their life. Think about all the services you have used over the years such as banks, utility companies, supermarkets and so on. We’ve all had issues using these types of service at some point or another and if we haven’t then lucky you!

Market research: Peter DeCaprio

The first step is market research. You need to find out what your competitors strengths and weaknesses are, where they lack behind etc. After that it’s up to you to decide how you’re going to do things better than them! For example let’s take a look at supermarkets. Supermarkets today stock millions upon millions of products from everyday household items such as toilet paper, tin foil, soap bars etc right through to car parts and even specialist equipment for farming. With such a wide variety of products available to buy it can be hard for a supermarket to specialize in a particular area because the need just isn’t there, however if you’re selling say winter clothing then there might only be one or two other supermarkets that stock similar products, it’s up to your company to decide whether or not this is an opportunity for you.

Competition:

You’ve identified what your competitors weaknesses are now it’s time for you to find out what their strengths are, try and find out as much information as possible so that you don’t fall into the same pitfalls they have. Think about all the good things they do, why would customers choose them over you? What do they offer that9 you don’t? Are there any new developments that they’re getting involved in?

Improve on their strengths:

When it comes to improving your product or service you need to ask yourself what is it that your customers want, what are you offering that will set you apart from the competition. You may need help from someone else such as an accountant, business advisor etc to get the full picture. Once you’ve identified these factors then it’s time to create them into something tangible so that the customer can partake in it.

The larger companies have already done so much research and market testing before bringing out a new product or service so if their customers like what they offer then why would they choose yours over theirs? The answer is because yours offers everything they do and more but at an even cheaper price! Don’t take my word for it though, do your homework and find out what people like and dislike about your competition then use that information to set yourself apart from the rest.

Why would anyone choose you over them?

The article conveys a lot of information while still maintaining its effortless tone throughout, the writer utilizes various rhetorical devices by choosing their words carefully in order to create a more persuasive argument. For example when they mention “it’s up to you to decide how you’re going to do things better than them!” this is known as an imperative sentence which implies authority, furthermore “you’ve identified what your competitors weaknesses are now it’s time for you to find out what their strengths are” this is known as an antithesis because the writer makes two contrasting statements of which one must be true, on top of that “the larger companies have already done so much research and market testing before bringing out a new product or service so if their customers like what they offer then why would they choose yours over theirs?” this can be classified as an argumentum ad populum.

This article doesn’t only apply to business; you can easily adapt it into everyday life by switching certain words for others such as “shopping mall” rather than supermarket etc. The main idea here is to find out what your competitors are doing right, how their products/services could benefit you etc then implement those ideas however you see fit!

Overall this article is very effective because it uses the right words to get its point across, if you were using certain other terms then your argument might’ve been less convincing. This applies to everyone whether they’re teachers, parents or business owners; the message stays consistent throughout while still managing to keep things interesting at the same time.
